Eric befriended Bruce (Jake’s younger brother) while traveling together in Japan with the O’ahu Visitor’s Bureau.  “The trip bonded everyone close together and Bruce and I stood in touch,” says Eric.  “I knew he was working on a solo project and I told him if he ever needed my help, don’t hesitate to ask.  I assumed that meant my guitar work, but when he called and told me he wanted me to sing as well, I was speechless!  When I found out that the song I was singing was the only song with vocals, with the exception of his bonus track, I couldn’t believe it!  He really has a nice voice, but he was very insistent on me doing it.  It was a real honor.”  Eric sings and plays guitar for Bruce’s composition, “Walk Me To The Stars.”

Mālia Ka‘ai is well known all over Hawai‘i for her beautiful classical voice. A 1985 alumni of Kamehameha, Mālia has expanded her education with an associates degree from Whitworth College in Music & BA in History and masters degree from the University of Hawai‘i – Mānoa in Pacific Island Studies. Being the General Manager for the Hawai‘i Youth Opera Chorus and involved with many other ensembles and organizations, Mālia’s recording, “Leo Nahenahe,” has been well received by many music listeners. Eric had the privilege to perform guitar and ‘ukulele for “Puamana,” and “‘Ohu ‘Ohu Kahakuloa.” Mahalo e Mālia for the honor to be apart of your recording.

“Sheraton Resort Of Hawaii”

This is a compilation CD released exclusively in Japan consisting of some Hawai‘i’s leading performers. Pai‘ea, performing Christopher Cross’ “Sailing” and Billy Kau‘i’s classic “Pretty Girl”, features Eric on lead guitar. Eric also assumed the role of “co-producer” on these two new Pai‘ea recordings.

Eric performs electric guitar for the following songs: “Your Precious Love” (performed by Damon Williams & Pomai), “Put A Little Love In Your Heart” (performed by B.E.T. & Ilona Irvine), and “Ain’t Nothing Like The Real Thing” (performed by Norm & Faith Rivera). Thank you to Bob St. John for all his kindness, support, and aloha.

This recording is a compilation CD released only in Japan. Over the course of four releases by Ka‘ala Boys (three of them including Eric in the band), twelve songs were selected for this project. Eric’s original, “Heaven In Your Eyes,” made the top 12! Although selected songs feature the Ka‘ala Boys of today (without Eric and Elton), the graphic art on this release features the Ka‘ala Boys who started recording from the beginning: Keoki V., Rodney Bejer, Eric Lee, and Elton McKeague.

Eric returns for Kawika’s second release, “Paradise,” performing lead electric guitar for songs: “For Your Love” and “My Only Lover,” and rhythm guitar for “Aloha No Kawika.” Thank you once again to Kawika Regidor for the opportunity to perform on his recordings.

Bob St. John invited Eric back to the studio to play electric guitar for Norm’s new recording. “I want that island feel sound through the licks you play. Not a lot, but just enough here and there,” instructs Bob to Eric. “Groove Wit’cha” made the 1st hit on the radio upon release and is also one of the selections that made Norm’s next recording, “Stay With Me” and his greatest hits recording, “The Best Of Norm.” Mahalo to bruddah Norm!

This was the pivotal point in the life of Ka‘ala Boys. “No Doubt About It” would be the last Ka‘ala Boys recording for both Eric Lee and Elton McKeague. Eric had to leave the band due to a conflict in daytime work schedules (actually, he was assigned to swing & graveyard shift, which fell right into gig-time). Elton became ill with cancer and has received the call to do exclusive performances for our Heavenly Father. The Ka‘ala Boys moved on with new guitarist Kawika Regidor and drummer Eric Folk and released two more recordings: “Can’t Get Enough” and “Hawaiian Style Live.” Sometimes Eric will come out to watch and support them…maybe even jump on stage for a song when they call him up. “We all miss Elton a lot. However, I believe that his passing has brought Keoki, Rodney, and myself a whole lot closer than we’ve ever been before,” Eric says. “I have a whole new respect for them, and they’re still kickin’ it on-stage!”

Producer, Bob St. John joins together the recording artists of Neos Productions, puting together a compilation of island music for the Season. Ka‘ala Boys perform “Reggae Christmas,” (written by Keoki V., Rodney Bejer, and Jan Luna) which became one of the CD’s hits on radio listening stations.

Ka‘ala Boys’ 2nd recording and Eric’s most favorite. “There is a certain level of growth and maturity in this recording,” Eric says. “It was also a time in the group’s life where everyone (individually as well as the band as a whole) was at it’s peak in performance levels. Eric contributed his original, “Heaven In Your Eyes.”

This was Ka‘ala Boys’ debut recording. The interesting thing about this quartet is that it consists of members from different aspects of music. Rodney Bejer (bass/vocals), formerly of Island Rhythms, Elton McKeague (drums), formerly of Kapena, Eric Lee (guitar/vocals), formerly of the group The Kanile‘a Collection, and band leader Keoki V. (‘ukulele/vocals) who makes his debut as a recording artist. Eric co-wrote “Forever More” with Keoki V.

After The Kanile‘a Collection separated, Eric started to sit-in with other bands and play as a backup singer/musician whenever people needed him. It was one day Eric got a call from Kanilau to sit-in for one of their members who was out sick. Eric seemed to have fit in so well that bandleader Roland Chang invited Eric back on numerous occasions. When Kanilau returned to the studio to record their fourth CD, they invited Eric to play on one of their songs: “Beautiful Kahana.” Mahalo e Kanilau!

The Kanile‘a Collection (Jay Kauka, Brian Mersberg, & Eric Lee) debuted in 1993 at the annual Ka Hīmeni ‘Ana (a competition of non-amplified Hawaiian music). Although most of the group repertoire consisted of “jamming” songs, public feedback often came back as, “Oh, you folks so nahenahe.” Thus, the album’s title: “Nahenahe.” This album features guest performaces of Hālau Hula ‘Olana and Peter Moon (guitar duet with Eric Lee).
